In reflecting on my journeys recently, I realized that my wanderlust comes from my grandfather. A Yemenite sailor, he came to Israel as part of Operation Magic Carpet and set my family on a new path. He loved to travel the world, but he loved my grandmother, their family, and Israel even more. He shared that love of Israel with his children, and they shared it with theirs. It鈥檚 that love that inspires me in my work as a Jewish Agency Israel Fellow.

I grew up in Yokne鈥檃m, Israel and went to school in the kibbutz school system just like my father. That education was a big part of forming my identity in a different way than if I had attended the regular Yokne鈥檃m school system. It taught me the importance of balancing community and independence. My first encounter with leadership and working with younger students was when I participated in the Tzofim (Scouts) in high school and worked as a camp counselor.聽

I enjoyed the Tzofim experience so much that I volunteered to participate in Taglit (Birthright Israel) when I was serving in the army. Meeting students from America who were my age but who lived such different lives from what I was used to was an incredibly powerful and moving experience. I decided to live in Canada for a year after my army service to see more of the world and to build my own independence. It was hard to live so far from my family and friends, but it was worth it to form relationships and learn the life lessons that I did during that year.聽

When I returned to Israel and decided to study International Relations at Hebrew University, I also decided to participate in a fellowship that would give me opportunities to travel outside of Israel and speak about my love for Israel and its people. As part of that fellowship, I visited a university campus in London that has a strong anti-Israel movement. It was one of the most impactful and difficult experiences of my life, but it left me with a strong sense of my purpose 鈥 to travel and be a positive voice for Israel in the world.聽

Being an Israel Fellow at University of California, Berkeley gives me the opportunity to connect with students and be that positive voice for Israel in a way that constantly inspires me. I鈥檝e also had the opportunity to offer Mizrahi Heritage programming to help students connect with their own stories, traditions, and culture. Working with Berkeley students, helping them create safe spaces for each other to learn and grow, has given me an appreciation for how connected Jewish people are all over the world and how our similarities outweigh our distances.聽

The roof at Berkeley Hillel

After finding thousands of dollars of spoiled kosher meat in the University of California, Berkeley Hillel refrigerator, Jewish students and professionals knew something needed to change.聽

This was just the latest consequence of crippling power outages in Northern California.

Last fall, as fierce winds and low humidity increased fire risk, utility companies cut power to millions of Californians to prevent electrical lines from sparking and igniting blazes. Being located in the 鈥 where cities and towns meet forests, grasslands, and scrublands 鈥 made Berkeley Hillel more vulnerable to wildfires.

Over the course of five months, the Hillel building lost power 13 times.

鈥淲e weren鈥檛 in the building during many of the outages because we were working from home,鈥 said Micah Lesch, director of Jewish student life at Berkeley Hillel. 鈥淲e frequently had to reset our clocks, WiFi, and security systems after days or weeks away from Hillel.鈥澛

To cope with future power outages amid wildfire season, Berkeley Hillel professionals started thinking about purchasing a backup battery.聽

Around the same time, Lesch began working with Hillel students to create a , a Jewish-inspired group that addresses climate change through political action. Dayenu Circle members discussed the benefits of solar energy. The conversation sparked an idea. They spoke with more Jewish students and professionals at Berkeley over the next few weeks, and soon after, the Hillel community decided solar panels and a backup battery were a must.聽

From there, students took the reins.聽

They met with various solar companies, brainstormed events and programs, and even scoped out the roof of the building to figure out where the panels would go.

Bella Weksler, a freshman studying society and environment, said going solar is one of the most important sustainability projects for Berkeley Hillel. Right now, Hillel can play a greater role in curbing the ever-worsening effects of climate change, she added.

鈥淭he solar panels will pay for themselves in a decade,鈥 Weksler said. 鈥淣ot only do they remove greenhouse gasses, but they are an investment in our future.鈥澛

To pay for the panels, Berkeley Hillel is planning to use a $25,000 grant from a private foundation that funds building infrastructure.聽

Sasha Pullman, a freshman and sustainable environmental design major, said th黑料传送门 is also going to use $19,000 raised on Giving Tuesday, an international day of online giving. The , a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that funds solar projects, is matching every dollar raised to help pay for the panels, she added.聽聽

鈥淲e really want to show that enough people care about this and can make this change,鈥 Pullman said.

The panels will likely be installed in late March by a solar company called Sun Light & Power. Current projections estimate 75% of the building will run on solar power, said Daniel Conway, a freshman studying environmental economics and policy.聽

鈥淲e are all so passionate about this project,鈥 Conway said. 鈥淗ow cool is it to be able to say that so much of our building will run off of solar power?鈥

Conway, along with Pullman and Weksler, recently presented the project to about 15 Berkeley Hillel board members. All three students said they felt supported by the Hillel professionals and the board during the meeting.聽

Pullman recalled that attendees were excited and frequently gave her a thumbs up during the presentation.聽

鈥淎s new students who want to see this change happen before we graduate, Hillel brought us in to talk about why solar energy and sustainability are important,鈥 Pullman said. 鈥淲e just really want to inspire other people and Hillels across the country.鈥

Lesch believes they will. He said Berkeley Hillel can provide a sustainability model for Hillels and other Jewish organizations looking to make a positive, long-lasting impact. Small changes, such as improving compost and recycling programs and switching to energy-efficient light bulbs, are simply not enough.聽

鈥淐onfronting the climate crisis requires spiritual audacity and bold political action,鈥 Lesch said. 鈥淲e are doing all we can to embody that here 黑料传送门.鈥澛

Inside Berkeley Hillel’s Innovative Approach to Disrupting Antisemitism

Jewish leaders at UC Berkeley have created a comprehensive toolbox for students to learn about antisemitism at Berkeley and beyond.

The , launched in the late spring of 2019, aims to holistically combat antisemitism through trainings, speakers, panels, and the notable 11-minute video, 鈥.鈥 The initiative received a $25,000 grant from the (AEN) in 2020.

鈥淭he idea [of the initiative] is to raise awareness and knowledge about antisemitism on campus and start to improve conversations,鈥 said , Associate Professor of History and Jewish Studies at UC Berkeley.

Katz co-founded the initiative with Berkeley Hillel Executive Director and Berkeley Law Professor . The professors鈥 scholarly expertise combined with Rabbi Naftlin-Kelman鈥檚 day-to-day contact with Jewish student life brings a high level of integrity to the initiative.

鈥淭hat combination really allows us to speak to people with a level of credibility that one of us alone would not have,鈥 Katz said.

The founders aim to teach the greater public about the background of Jews, Judaism, and antisemitism while offering new language to support more constructive conversations.

鈥淎fter watching [the film] for 11 minutes, students immediately leave feeling more confident [that they have] tools to call out antisemitism and recognize it when they see it,鈥 Naftlin-Kelman said.

The video addresses the history of Jews and antisemitism through clear language and visuals. In fact, the script took four and a half months of writing and revising to capture three main takeaways, including the longer history of anti-Jewish hatred, the issue of Jews and race in America today, and the question of anti-Zionism and antisemitism, Katz said.

鈥淭he biggest challenge is that the issues are extremely complex, fraught, and extraordinarily divisive for the wider campus community and the American Jewish community,鈥 Katz said. 鈥淲e wanted to create something that would be clear and nuanced but also feel like it was open to people with different perspectives.鈥

The pandemic didn鈥檛 halt the debut of the initiative at universities. , ASUC Student Senator at UC Berkeley, facilitated an antisemitism training for the Berkeley student body with the Antisemitism Education Initiative video leading the conversation. Only minutes into the training, the emotional impact of the video became apparent to Morris.

鈥淒uring the training in the senate, there鈥檚 one other Jewish senator who expressed to me that she started to tear up during the training because of how validating it was,鈥 Morris said. 鈥淪o the video does a really good job of validating Jewish students and [giving them] a vocabulary to actually speak up about antisemitism.鈥

This innovative approach to disrupting antisemitism is just the beginning. Naftlin-Kelman plans to continue using education to support a campus climate where Jewish college students can be their authentic selves.

鈥淔rom a place of education, we can empower administrators, student leaders, and staff to feel confident calling out antisemitism or even things that make it difficult for Jewish students to be their whole selves on campus,鈥 Naftlin-Kelman said.

The Antisemitism Education Initiative video has nearly 7,000 views on Youtube and amassed national attention. 鈥淥ur goal is to just really put it out there. We’ve been thrilled by how many people have used it as a resource,鈥 Naftlin-Kelman said. 鈥淓very word makes a difference.鈥

鈥淕rowing up in a Persian Jewish community, I was surrounded by people who shared my values, beliefs and culture. I didn’t expect to find such a vibrant Persian Jewish community at Berkeley Hillel. I felt at home. Over the past few months on Wednesday nights, a group of Persian Jewish students like me gather 黑料传送门 to talk, drink tea and catch up. I wouldn’t have interacted with these students if not for Hillel. As a new student at Berkeley, it can be intimidating because you’re going to a place where you feel like everybody already knows each other. Establishing these smaller communities, where you can get to know a group of people more intimately and then attend bigger events knowing that you’ll have people to talk to, is very comforting.鈥 鈥 Donna Kharrazi, University of California, Berkeley
