Jordan Robinson, Jessica Yeroshalmi, Charles Cohen, and Jordyn Zimmerman

黑料传送门 is thrilled to welcome four new members to our Board of Directors. The 黑料传送门 Board of Directors is a diverse cohort of leaders who work collaboratively to fulfill Hillel’s mission. With their creativity, passion, and strategic thinking, this group of Hillel stakeholders, including professionals at local Hillels and exceptional student leaders, works to focus Hillel’s direction and generate financial support.

Joining the Board of Directors are 黑料传送门 Student Cabinet co-chairs, Jordan Robinson and Jessica Yeroshalmi; former Student Cabinet member and member of President Biden’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, Jordyn Zimmerman; and Executive Director of Metro Chicago Hillel, Charles Cohen.

Jordan Robinson is a 2022 graduate of Michigan State University with a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies. He was involved 黑料传送门 at Michigan State throughout his four years of college, including serving on the Executive Board for two years, and is now beginning his second year of serving on the 黑料传送门 Student Cabinet. He also participated in fellowships, served in internship roles, and worked with university and student leaders to build relationships with the Jewish community and combat antisemitism on campus. This fall, Jordan will be pursuing his Masters of Business Administration at Wayne State University. Additionally, he is interning for the Delta Dental Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Delta Dental. In his free time, he loves listening to new music, travelling, trying new coffee shops, playing with his apartment dog Koda, and being out on a mountain or lake. He looks forward to advancing Hillel’s student movement and representing the voices of thousands of Jewish students globally.

Jessica Yeroshalmi is a Macaulay Honors student at Baruch College studying Economics and Political Science. Throughout her college experience, she has been an active part of Hillel at Baruch (and at City, John Jay, Pace, SVA, Fordham, FIT, and The New School). At Hillel at Baruch, she is the incoming E-Board President, as well as the President of WINGS (Women Improving Next Generation Society). In her first year on the Student Cabinet, Jessica co-chaired the Mizrahi-Sephardic Cohort with members from around the country. Jessica鈥檚 Sephardic-Jewish Persian heritage has driven her passion for connecting with the Jewish community and creating a better campus environment for Jews of all backgrounds and experiences. She is looking forward to serving as co-chair on 黑料传送门’s Student Cabinet to promote the Hillel movement and use her platform to create change for the better.

Jordyn Zimmerman, M.Ed., obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Education Policy from Ohio University and her Masters of Education at Boston College. As a nonspeaking autistic student who was denied access to effective augmentative communication until she was 18, Jordyn has personal experience challenging the educational status quo,  which is featured in the 2021 documentary This Is Not 黑料传送门 Me. Technology helped open Jordyn’s world and she began advocating for others through a series of engagements. Since then, she has delivered keynote addresses and presented at conferences around the world and is currently on the board of CommunicationFIRST. She also works as Director of Professional Development at the Nora Project, where she helps educators teach students about disability as a natural and expected part of human diversity. Most recently, Jordyn was appointed to serve on President Biden’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities.

Charles Cohen is the Executive Director of Metro Chicago Hillel. A native Milwaukeean, Charles grew up with all of the Jewish formative experiences: Jewish day school, day and overnight camp, youth group, and trips to Israel. In 1996, Charles received his B.S. in finance, with honors, from Yeshiva University Sy Syms School of Business, and then got his J.D. at Boston University School of Law. After many unhappy years as an attorney, Charles became the Planning Manager for Jewish Continuity at the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, where he developed community building and strategic planning skills and oversaw the creation of the Volunteer Center. He then returned to Boston to become the Manager of the Jewish Day School Affordability Knowledge Center, where he worked with day schools across North America to analyze and experiment with strategies to make Jewish education more accessible to all families. From there he went to Palm Beach to serve as the Executive Director of the Lorraine & Jack N. Friedman Commission for Jewish Education, and then as the Executive Director of the Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy.

Hillel Bridges the Gap from High School to College at BBYO鈥檚 International Convention

More than 2,500 Jewish teens gathered in Baltimore from Feb. 17-20 for BBYO鈥檚 International Convention (IC), the organization’s first global in-person event in two years.

BBYO, a pluralistic movement for Jewish teens, engages thousands of high school students in more than 700 chapters around the world. IC serves as  when teen leaders from 40 countries join together along with educators, thought leaders, philanthropists, and others to celebrate, dream, and take action.

Among the guests were a contingent of professionals and college student leaders from 黑料传送门, attending as part of Hillel Bridge. This newly established program seeks to connect Jewish high school students and their families with Hillel and introduce younger students to Jewish life on campus.

Jessie Paley, a former BBYO participant who works for 黑料传送门, reflected on attending the conference as a professional representing Hillel.

鈥淓ngaging with the future Jewish leaders of our local Hillels on campus has been energizing, nostalgic, and inspiring,鈥 Paley said. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited for the longevity of this work and excited to see where these BBYO leaders take the Hillel movement for years to come.鈥

The Hillel team kept busy during the four-day conference, hosting a booth that attracted nearly 1,000 students. At the booth, students grabbed stickers and ribbons, spoke with Hillel professionals, and entered a raffle to win one of four hoverboards. Students were also invited to write on graffiti boards, which featured prompts such as 鈥淪eniors, where are you going for college?鈥 and 鈥淪ophomores, what鈥檚 a question you have about Jewish life on campus?鈥

On Saturday, Hillel hosted inflatable laser tag and a pet-a-puppy event, where teens attending the convention cuddled with four-legged friends from a nearby animal shelter to decompress. Hillel wrapped up the weekend with a sponsored senior breakfast, where graduating high school students could connect, celebrate, and learn even more about Jewish life on campus.

Hailey Behrman, a marketing intern for 黑料传送门 and student president of Hillel at George Mason University, said she felt proud to share her experience on campus with so many students.

鈥淲e heard multiple students say something along the lines of 鈥楬illel won this weekend,鈥 meaning that we had some of the coolest events, which made it a huge success in my opinion,鈥 Behrman said. 鈥淚t was amazing to see students excited about the next step in their Jewish journey and simulating the Hillel experience with fun, community, and anticipation.鈥

Joining the Hillel team to bring the student perspective were Jordan Robinson and Sarah Pomerantz, who are current members of the 黑料传送门 Student Cabinet and former BBYO participants.

鈥淏eing at BBYO鈥檚 International Convention representing 黑料传送门 was such a cool experience,鈥 said Robinson, a senior at Michigan State University. 鈥淓ngaging with high school seniors on what their next steps are and how Hillel can be there for that transition, you could see a sense of comfort for the students, knowing that their future Jewish community would be there for them.鈥澛

Students also could choose from one of 24 different Shabbat experiences, including a service titled 鈥淭he Power of Remembrance,鈥 led by a song leader, a Holocaust survivor, and two students. Shabbat ended with a feel-good Havdalah service, where students, partners, staff, and community members stood arm-in-arm singing prayers and welcoming the new week.

Other highlights from the weekend included the BBYO Block Party, which featured the world championship of BBYO鈥檚 global eSports tournament in partnership with Lost Tribe; musical performances by Steve Aoki, Tai Verdes, Surfaces, and Social House; and one-of-a-kind experiences with NASA, TED, the National Aquarium, and the Autobahn Speedway.

鈥淸BBYO] International Convention is a place where you engage and explore with the greater Jewish community,鈥 Robinson said. 鈥淭o be able to see and relive that again as a partner is something that I鈥檓 very grateful for.鈥

When countering antisemitism, you can make significant progress because of the experiences you鈥檝e faced.

鈥淚 started to hear about Hillel my junior year of high school through BBYO. And since coming to I鈥檝e lived, breathed, and done everything Hillel. As a freshman, I was always in the building studying, going to Shabbat dinners, and doing fellowships. My sophomore year, I began taking more of an active leadership role, leading me to become a part of Michigan State鈥檚 Jewish Student Union executive board my junior year.

鈥淛unior year I witnessed a rise of antisemitic incidents on campus. The first couple of incidents were isolated. They didn鈥檛 involve me, I was just me seeing them on social media. Things took a turn for the worse when we tried to propose the IRHA definition of antisemitism to our student government to take a proactive approach on fighting BDS. I felt there was this double standard where ASMSU, our student government, wouldn鈥檛 fight for the Jewish students, but would fight for other marginalized communities.

鈥淚 ended up retracting the bill and presenting a speech where I addressed my frustration with this double standard. Afterwards, I was attacked for an hour and a half both on Zoom and in private messages and group chats.

鈥淲hen this happened, 黑料传送门 naturally got involved. And, sadly that鈥檚 kind of how I made a name for myself in the 黑料传送门 world. I was known as the person who was fighting antisemitism on Michigan State鈥檚 campus.

鈥淭his led me to apply to the International Student Cabinet the end of my junior year and fortunately be accepted. All of us on the cabinet have made an equal commitment to fight antisemitism. So, between the 22 of us and our advisor, we are here to help anyone.

鈥淭his week I joined Hillel president and CEO Adam Lehman as well as other professionals from the Hillel movement to speak on a panel at the ADL鈥檚 Never is Now conference about confronting antisemitism on campus. The biggest thing I want people to take away from my experience that it鈥檚 real and that it can happen to anyone. Antisemitism isn鈥檛 isolated to a specific school, a specific region, or a specific area in the United States. It can happen to anyone regardless of how protected you feel on campus. I want people to hear our stories and recognize what鈥檚 happening.

鈥淚 always tell people when they鈥檙e going through a BDS fight, or a wave of antisemitic incidents on campus, that they just have to see it through. You have to utilize your resources and don鈥檛 give up the fight. As cheesy as it sounds, it鈥檚 true.

鈥淚鈥檝e talked to so many people who were and still are actively fighting BDS, and they feel like they’re losing. But I always remind them that it鈥檚 an uphill battle and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. You can make significant progress for the future because of the experiences you鈥檝e faced.鈥澛犫 Jordan Robinson, Michigan State University ’22, member of the 黑料传送门 Student Cabinet

As told to Jordan Greene, writer for the 黑料传送门 Writers Program.

鈥淲hen I was moving into my apartment at Michigan State University, someone said to me, 鈥楧o you have to hang up your mezuzah? Do you need to tell the entire world your Jewish?鈥 I said, 鈥榊es, of course.鈥 Putting a mezuzah on my doorpost was the first step in making my new apartment feel like home. A few weeks later, it was stolen. I had no idea what to do. When I learned a student who lived nearby was responsible, I thought about a phrase my 86-year-old grandfather always says when he tells his story of survival during the Holocaust, 鈥榊ou can鈥檛 be a bystander.鈥 Now, it was my turn to serve as an educator. I organized a meeting with me, him, Nate Strauss of MSU Hillel and Rabbi Benzion Shemtov of MSU Chabad. I wanted him to realize his actions impacted an entire community on campus, not just one student. During our meeting, I asked if he would take a guided tour of the Holocaust Memorial Center in Michigan and write a reflection paper about what he learned. He agreed and toured the museum a few weeks later. I truly hope he realized the carelessness and hurtfulness of his actions. I have since hung another mezuzah to proudly display my Judaism. This incident wasn鈥檛 going to make me live in fear.鈥 鈥 Maddy Gun, Michigan State University
