鈥淎ttending the No Fear Rally was, to sum it up in one word, encouraging. It was incredible to see Jews and non-Jews of all different backgrounds, statuses, connections to Judaism, connections to Israel 鈥 all present at the rally, really standing up against antisemitism. It was also incredible just to see some friends there and to see people that are really powerful and really influential and really excited to stand up against antisemitism be present there.

鈥淐overing the rally on social media for Hillel was an extremely exciting opportunity for me because I not only had to think about how I viewed the rally through my own eyes but also how I could get it viewed through any different kind of background. It was really important to me to make sure as many speakers were covered, as many parts of the speeches were covered, as possible. I wanted to show the public the meat of what the speeches were saying, not just the exciting parts. So many of the speakers spoke so much about coexistence and inclusion and equality, and I thought that was just so important that it needed to be put out into the world.

鈥淲hat I saw at the rally that I hope to take into my role in the Student Cabinet this next year is that, first and foremost, students need resources and need to know that people in high-up places and all over the world are supporting them. I think that so often students can feel left alone, can feel isolated, can feel like they鈥檙e the only people in the world that are trying to stand up to antisemitism, and if this rally showed us anything, it鈥檚 that it鈥檚 not true. And so I know that my role within the 黑料传送门 Student Cabinet is to be constantly be showing them that that is not true and they have incredibly strong partners in this fight.

鈥淚 want to be constantly listening to the students and asking them 鈥榃hat do you need? How can I help you? What resources do you need? How can I best provide those resources for you and how can I just be there?鈥 I think a lot of times too students just need to have a space to be able to speak about the hardships that they鈥檙e going through, so it鈥檚 not just about the resources going forward, but it鈥檚 also about a space where students can vent about the difficulties that they face. To be able to provide that this next year is going to be really important for me.

鈥淚t all really just comes back to that one word 鈥 encouraging. I think the rally was a start to a much broader effort to combat antisemitism in the United States and in the world. It鈥檚 not the end-all, be-all, but if that鈥檚 the start, it鈥檚 a really good start.鈥 鈥 Ben Lefkowitz, Student Cabinet Co-Chair, Emory University 鈥22

My kippah sparked dialogue within religious communities, most notably with a monk.

鈥淚 began wearing a kippah when I was in kindergarten, on my own accord. Having grown up in a Jewish community and at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Maryland, it was commonplace. And when I arrived to Emory University, I decided to keep the kippah on. I soon realized that my kippah sparked dialogue within the interreligious community, most notably with a monk on campus during my freshman year. I began to research Buddhism and stumbled upon the Emory-Tibet Partnership, a six-week program in India that allows students to learn about Buddhist culture, philosophy and ethics while teaching science and English to the Buddhist monastic community. So last summer, I boarded a plane with about 30 students to Dharamsala, India.

鈥淲hile learning, I met Geshe Damchoe Dammy-La, a monk in charge of our program in Northern India. We became friends over conversations about聽religion and philosophy. I soon聽realized he was planning to travel to Israel and visit the Western Wall. As we transitioned to the Buddhist monastery in Southern India, I gave Geshe Damchoe a gift 鈥 my Jimmy Neutron embroidered kippah. After moving south, we kept in touch. Fast forward. Almost seven months later, Geshe Damchoe Dammy-La sent me a photo of him praying at the Western Wall, with my Jimmy Neutron kippah proudly on his head.

鈥淭hat photo meant so much to me. My parents and my Jewish community have instilled in me the value of creating an open tent 鈥 welcoming in strangers and creating meaningful聽dialogue and relationships. Because of that, I now have an incredible friendship with a monk who lives halfway around the world. And I鈥檓 hopeful that somehow our engagement is聽changing the world one small friendship at a time.鈥 鈥 David Kulp, member of 黑料传送门 Student Cabinet, Emory University
