Six Amazing Hillel Sukkahs

Author

Date

October 6, 2023

Sukkot is a harvest festival commemorating the 40 years the ancient Israelites spent wandering in the desert, searching for the land of Israel. The weeklong festival is observed by building and spending time in a sukkah, a temporary outdoor structure, where families, friends, and communities gather, eat, and sometimes even sleep. At campus Hillels this year, students created beautiful sukkahs, hosted meaningful and fun programs, and used them as hubs for service projects. Read more:

On a predictably hot Wednesday afternoon, twelve Eckerd Hillel students gathered on campus to build a sukkah 鈥 the first in ten years! Throughout the week, the sukkah was in high demand, for Shabbat and Havdalah services, a 鈥淧izza in the Hut鈥 dinner, and plenty of hang-outs and study sessions. As Mindy Rosenthal, Program Director at Eckerd Hillel, described, 鈥淲ith little know-how but a great deal of fortitude, the sukkah arose – with students somewhat surprised, but proud and overjoyed by their accomplishment.鈥 She added that, 鈥淐ome the end of the holiday, the sukkah will be placed in storage until the next Sukkot in St. Pete. A new Eckerd College tradition has been born.鈥

UR Hillel kicked off Sukkot with a bagel brunch and candy sukkah-making event. Students and staff were joined by Sasha the therapy dog for cuddles as they enjoyed bagels and schmear. Brunch was followed by a candy sukkah bar, where students made tiny sukkahs that, according to Sarah Walters, Director of Student Life at UR Hillel, 鈥渨ere as adorable as they were tasty!鈥

Florida International University

At FIU Hillel, students used their sukkah as the home base for several service projects.

As part of Hillel at FIU’s Social Justice Sukkah, students packed 50 “blessing bags” to distribute to the unhoused population in communities near the University. In more food justice work, Hillel at FIU also partnered with Repair the World to pack over 100 food baskets for the Kosher Food Pantry hosted by the local Jewish Community Services.

Ithaca College

Ithaca Hillel’s “Shuka in the Sukkah” gave students a chance to go on a shopping spree while celebrating.

Hillel at Ithaca鈥檚 鈥淪huka in the Sukkah鈥 brought Israel to Ithaca, New York, turning their sukkah into an open-air market meets Aroma cafe. Over 100 students stopped by to shake the lulav and etrog, sip on ice Aromas, and pick up some sweet Hillel swag, all while jamming to an Israeli playlist.

Northeastern University

Northeastern Hillel students enjoyed sushi in their sukkah, along with opportunities to hang out with friends and Hillel staff.

Northeastern Hillel hosted a 鈥淗ang in the Hut with Hillel (Staff),鈥 where students could swing by the sukkah, shake the lulav, and take a study break, as well as a 鈥淪ushi in the Sukkah with the FYSH鈥 for first-year and transfer students. In addition to providing opportunities to relax, Hillel also hosted learning opportunities, bringing their Jewish Learning Fellowship (JLF) courses and a special session on wellbeing in Judaism to the sukkah.

University of Wisconsin

Students sit in a sukkah at a table covered with food.
At “Shakshuka in the Sukkah,” UW Hillel students learned about the history of the dish and how to make it – then enjoyed the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor.

鈥淪hakshuka in the Sukkah鈥 was the Sukkot edition of one of UW Hillel鈥檚 programs, Be’Teavon (Hebrew for 鈥渂on appetit鈥) – which was created by their Israel Fellow, Gefen. Students had the opportunity to gather in Hillel鈥檚 rooftop sukkah to cook shakshuka, as well as learn about the unique origins of this delicious Israeli dish. Afterward, the students-turned-chefs had the opportunity to enjoy their meal in the sukkah, along with great company.

鈥淭he senior class also gathered at Greg and Andrea Steinberger’s house for their first Kabbalah for Seniors night,鈥 shared Sophie Shapiro, Director of Student Life at UW Hillel. 鈥淭hey engaged in meaningful conversations about the holiday and Jewish life after college. Plus, they were treated to a delicious dinner, handmade by our one and only Rabbi Andrea Steinberger!鈥

Florida State University

Students gather for bonding and snacks at FSU Hillel’s Kvetch Sesh

When Hurricane Idalia disrupted move-in and welcome plans for students beginning and returning to Florida State University (FSU), FSU Hillel provided a safe and dry space for students to meet each other and settle into the semester. At FSU Hillel鈥檚 spontaneous Kvetch Sesh, complete with bagels and snacks, students had the opportunity to share excitement for the new school year, worries about the impact of the storm, and overall, had fun getting to know each other.

University of Connecticut

First-year students and upper class mentors on a fun trip to Six Flags

University of Connecticut Hillel’s (UConn Hillel) annual FYSH (First Year Students of Hillel) program pairs first-year UConn students with an upper-class mentor to help them adjust to college life. This year’s FYSH Fest welcomed 22 first-year students to campus before the semester began. In addition to fun at Six Flags, roller skating, and a scavenger hunt, students dove into deep discussions on Judaism, academic goals, and life in general. Edina Oestreicher, Executive Director of UConn Hillel, shared, 鈥淲e’re so excited that we could give them a taste of the fun, warm, and welcoming community Hillel has to offer, and most importantly, introduce them to their home away from home in Storrs.鈥

Syracuse University

First-year students at Syracuse University spending time together at FreshFest

FreshFest at Syracuse Hillel, a pre-orientation program that helps first-year students connect with each other and settle in on campus, welcomed almost 300 students this year, making it the largest pre-orientation program on the University鈥檚 campus. As the High Holidays approach, the energy from FreshFest carries through into programming and services, such as delicious holiday meals, social justice programs like Reverse Tashlich, and more, designed to make Syracuse Hillel feel like a home away from home for all Jewish students.

Binghamton University

In addition to also hosting their own FreshFest, Hillel at Binghamton welcomed students from all years to a week of fun that included charcuterie making, a barbecue, a birthday party for all the summer birthdays, and a welcome-back Shabbat. As Emi, Class of 2024 shared, 鈥淲e kicked off the school year in style. I can鈥檛 wait to see wh黑料传送门 at Binghamton has in store!鈥

Arizona State University

First-year students settling in at ASU Hillel’s Welcome Brunch

To welcome first-year students to campus, Arizona State University Hillel (ASU Hillel) hosted over 130 guests for a Welcome Brunch that included delicious food and opportunities to听 learn about all that ASU Hillel has to offer, including Shabbat programming, weekly snacks and chats with Hillel staff members, and High Holiday meals and services. Parents and students attended respective welcome Q & A sessions. Rabbi Suzy Stone, the Senior Jewish Educator and Campus Rabbi, spent time with the students so they could start to get to know her from day one!听

Later in the week, over 200 students filled the ASU Hillel building for the first Shabbat of the year, which featured musical services, communal Shabbat meals, and time to meet new friends and reconnect with old ones.

Connecting Across Faith Traditions

In partnership with the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation, 黑料传送门鈥檚 Social Impact Department offers Interfaith Outreach Microgrants, which support projects that are the outgrowth of collaborative relationship-building between Jewish students and students from other faith traditions, and that result in expanding and strengthening relationships among students from different faith traditions. Below are some examples of recent multifaith programs from across the country.听

Syracuse University:

Rabbi Ethan Bair and Imam Amir Duri膰, both chaplains at Syracuse University, were inspired to build relationships between the Jewish and Muslim students on campus as a way to strengthen their individual and shared faith communities. With an Interfaith Microgrant from 黑料传送门, Imam Duri膰 and Rabbi Bair worked with their student leaders to host a that would serve as an iftar for Muslim students and an opportunity to observe Passover for Jewish students. 120 students with equal representation from both faith communities gathered for dinner, a Kahoot about the relationship between Judaism and Islam, and powerful conversations about the connections between these two faith traditions.

The celebration was followed by a community service project centered around the value of tzedakah or sadaqah, shared by both faiths. Both Rabbi Blair and Imam Duri膰 remain committed to continued shared learning and celebrations.听

Wake Forest University:

During Passover and Ramadan, students from across multiple faith communities gathered together for a communal Interfaith Seder and Iftar. Over 60 students who identify as Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, and more attended the event. Aman Kimani, the President of the Hindu Student Association shared, 鈥淚t was a really impactful and immersive experience to learn about each other鈥檚 cultures and religions – not just with Jewish and Muslim people, but with people who hold all kinds of beliefs and traditions.鈥澨

University of Miami:

The University of Miami Hillel recently hosted an Interfaith Shabbat program, led by student leaders from multiple faith communities. Katherine Pratha, one of the student organizers of the event, shared this reflection, 鈥淲e had a fantastic time at InterFaith Shabbat! I truly enjoyed the ability to work with student leaders from other faiths on an event that meant so much to me. Coming from an interfaith family, dialogue surrounding shared traditions and differences has always been a conversation of value to myself and my learning. The ability to learn from other students of other faith practices while sharing the Jewish tradition of Shabbat with communities at the University of Miami was an enriching experience that I sincerely hope to repeat.鈥
