Explore Denison University Hillel
Denison's Jewish student organization kicks off each year by welcoming new students with a Cookies and Candles Shabbat during or just after August orientation. Following this initial event, Hillel offers a home-cooked Shabbat dinner in Denison’s Open House for Religious and Spiritual Life every Friday night during the academic year. In addition to weekly Shabbat programming, we celebrate all of the major Jewish holidays as a community. Each year we bring a Rabbi to campus to lead High Holiday services, as well as offer a community Rosh Hashanah dinner and a Yom Kippur break-fast meal. We build a Sukkah together on our academic quad to celebrate Sukkot, and our annual Latke Fest is our most popular event of the year during Hanukkah! We celebrate Purim by getting together and retelling the Megillah story in a fun and informal way, and a community Passover Seder is led by Denison Hillel leaders annually. Although the Jewish student population is a relative small portion (approximately 5%) of the entire student body at Denison, the community is a tight-knit one. Strong student leadership, a part-time professional advisor, and partnerships with ºÚÁÏ´«ËÍÃÅ and Denison's Center for Religious and Spiritual Life foster a support system that assures that individual student needs are met. Denison Hillel is looking to grow Jewish life at Denison, and staff/faculty invested in the group are pursuing more frequent services available on campus, more kosher dining options, and connecting with the larger Columbus Jewish Community. We’re small but mighty!
